ZZ Top - La Futura (29/10/2012)
Did you know, Gibbons and Hill from ZZ Top have been growing their beards since 1979? And the one member of the band that doesn't have a beard is Frank Beard? Oh the irony!
"Those are cool facts, what about the music?"
With beards like that, it doesn't matter what music you play, you have respect in my book.
The album La Futura (means the future in English) is a combination of ZZ Top's old classic rock and roadhouse blues with the use of some new editing technologies that have evolved since their last album since Mescalero in 2003.
The opening track I Gotsta Get Paid is a cover of 25 Lighters of 90’s hip hop hip-hop artists DJ DMD, Lil Keke, and MC Fat Pat. It includes a ripping solo in the middle, which is truly reminiscent of the music that gained them popularity. It was also played in Hollywood movie “Battleship”.
You realise very quickly that the music is raw and has the classic ZZ Top sound, with distorted guitars and blues riffs, steady beats with cymbals and Billy Gibbons worn voice. La Futara includes combinations of up tempo heavy rock anthems like I Don't Wanna Lose,Lose, You and some slower classic blues numbers like Over You and It’s Too Easy Mañana .
The chords are short and the riffs are catchy. Heartache in Blue is particularly bluesy and includes some harmonica. The last song, Have A Lttle Mercy ends with the biggest solo guitar riff on the album and is a great conclusion to a consistent rock album.
Many of the songs remind me of playing La Grange on guitar hero. La Futura is a successful collaboration of songs that are different but do not deviate from the old ZZ Top style.
