Voltaire Twins - Apollo (27/09/2012)
The Voltaire Twins have gone from strength to strength since stepping out into the electro dance scene almost four years ago.
This year alone, siblings Jaymes and Tegan have showcased themselves at SXSW and BigSound, landed a support slot with The Maccabees. They also won a Western Australian Music Award (WAMi) for best Dance/Electronic act of the year. Mixed by Lars Stalfors from The Mars Volta, the talented duo have yet again offered up another handful of disco delights in their third EP ‘Apollo’.
‘Solaris’ opens the album resolutely with its humming atmospheric vibe. Ominous synth chords move amongst tribal beats and combine with the contrastingly light and low vocals of brother and sister. Musical interchanges including the chilled piano melody in the chorus, make for a really colourful tune.
‘Young Adult’ is the lead release off the EP and it’s not hard to see why, with its pop hooks, light playfulness and infectious beat, it’s very easy to move along to. The song’s rebellious lyrics paired with bubbly effects and bold vocal harmonies captures the twin’s youthful reminiscing very succinctly.
‘Jump Cuts’ is about an endless summer and conjures up images of friends gathering around beach bonfires, whilst ‘Silhouettes’ based on a short story the band wrote has a dreamy sense of longing echoing through the lyrics, ‘don’t close your eyes yet, this place is perfect, just like we never meant’.
The Voltaire Twins have evoked a dreamlike state in ‘Apollo’, as with previous releases the duo’s knack for creating relaxed, dance worthy tunes has not waned one ounce. With their steady success and hopefully a full length release in the works, there is only one way to go from here and that’s up.
