Vinnie Fiorello - Less Than Jake (25/09/2015)
Vinnie Fiorello has co-founded and subsequently toured with Ska Punk royalty Less Than Jake for nigh on a quarter of a century by the time The 59th Sound is lucky enough to have a chat with the guy on the line from the band’s beloved home state of Florida. A tour down under to Australia’s very pretty, but extraordinarily remote shores once again beckons, having last visited as a part of Soundwave 2014 (their third appearance on the bill). This time it’s a co-headliner alongside long time BFF’s Reel Big Fish, backed the explosive and imminently world dominating local Punk/ Korg/ Weed-and-beer enthusiasts The Bennies. Although LTJ have been on a globally touring band for longer than many of the folks who come to see them have been alive, Vinnie is quick to point out that the gents aren’t slowing down.
“Trust me, this was a very heavy year of touring. So you’re actually catching me now, I just got back from Chicago Riotfest a few days ago, and then the weekend before that was our home town shows, the weekend before that was Denver Riotfest, and then the week before that we’d done six weeks in Europe. So you’re catching me taking a breath before next Wednesday and leaving for Japan, and then down to Australia. It comes in waves, y’know?"
“If you’re in a record cycle it’s busy, if you’re not in a record cycle then you’re home doing a one-off gig, and that’s cool too, man. I’ll be honest with you, I prefer the variety of it. I’m fine not being on tour all year long. Because we’ve done that. We’ve done three weeks on, two weeks off, three weeks on, two weeks off, for… years! Now we can kind of kick back and be picky and choosy about what we pick and what we don’t.”
There’s no doubt that Vinnie, Chris, Roger, Peter, and Buddy are the best of mates, but Vinnie’s sage-like wisdom explains band dynamics on a whole different level, and how they track over the course of 23 and-a-bit years together.
“Being in a band is like a bell curve, man. When it comes to controversy and anger, and craziness. It starts when everyone’s in it together, and it’s a small band. Then you sort of go on being in a band, there’s this middle ground that has a lot of, like, chaos in it. Then if you survive that chaos and continue to be in a band, it starts to lessen and lessen. You know what? Dude, I’ve known these guys for twenty five years, more than half my life, some of them! Shit is okay sometimes, and sometimes if I know how I’m in a pissy mood, I know how to dial up Chris to get mad, and Roger (chuckles). You just kind of go on like that. We’re brothers and family, man. We realize what we have now – 23 years later – I mean, we’ve survived fuckin’ divorces, we’ve survived deaths in the family, everything. Shit, we survived Limp Bizkit being fuckin’ popular! We’re good, y’know?”
Between the tours, LTJ are no slackers. They’ve consistently released albums and EPs every two or so years without fail since forming in 1992. That said, they’ve certainly left their mark on Aussie audiences, nay, global audiences, with such a huge history of visits to folks of nearly every race, colour, and creed.
“I think (we’ve been to Australia) thirteen times. There’s not a lot of people who get to travel as much as we do! I said in an earlier interview that 23 years in, the travelling, the songs, and the fans and everything? I don’t throw around the word ‘blessed’ a lot, but fuck. Man! We’re blessed to be in a band! That doesn’t have any crazy religious connotation to it, it’s just that fuck, man… we’re lucky.”
“When push comes to shove, we’re five jack offs from Florida. We’re alright, you know? I’m not going to sit here and blow smoke up my own ass about it, but it’s pretty fucking awesome, and I feel lucky that we get to do what we gotta do. There’s not a day that goes by, especially lately, that I take it for granted.”
It’s pretty easy to see why The Jake and Reel Big Fish would join forces for a Ska-tastic tour down under. They’ve been friends and tour partners globally for the better part of both bands’ existences, and share a large degree of their long-devoted fan bases. The Bennies, some would argue, are an Australian modern equivalent of trendsetters like Jake and RBF. They love a laugh, a beer, a good time, and have certainly gathered the attention of many bands abroad after seeing and hearing their rollicking approach to making music. So how did LTJ decide to get them along and join the tour?
“It’s weird because I’ve talked to Anty from The Bennies a bunch prior to this tour. He had hit me up about hanging out when they were on tour in The United States, and this festival in (LTJ’s hometown) Gainesville, FL, but we didn’t connect. Then when we were talking about bands to open up for us for this tour, I told our agent I really want this band The Bennies to open up. I know Soundwave’s had them before, I know Soundwave knows who they are, so let’s get it done! I’d hit up Anty on Facebook of all fuckin’ places. Those guys were very gracious to be able to open up the show, man. I’m so stoked to have them, stoked to see them play live, and stoked to hang out.”
Vinnie takes a hardened veteran’s perspective when questioned with the possibility that he and his band that have done a few more trips around the sun than The Bennies may have to party with them throughout the tour. A song written about a certain infamous Australian punk rock front man is inevitably discussed.
“We've toured with Frenzal Rhomb, my friend. In their heyday of drugs and alcohol. (The song – Jay Frenzal) was totally a joke, but he did actually fuck up our bus that day in Denver, Colorado. Were we mad? We were never mad, but y’know… yeah, he did take a two-by-four to our bus to try and break it, and fuck up the bus. Was he on ecstasy at the time? Very, very good ecstasy, yes. But did Chris from Less Than Jake give him that ecstasy? He sure did, so I really have to blame Chris from Less Than Jake for Jay fucking up our bus, if that makes sense.”
With this all in mind, it’s easy to comprehend that all members of Less Than Jake would have the party-to-gig ratio all sorted on tour, so as not to trash bag themselves too hard before a set. Vinnie departs with whether he can or does inform and educate younger bans around him on how to handle the slippery slope of mind-altering proclivities on the road.
“Most young bands are smarter than older bands! It’s what they’ve grown up with. They’ve been able to get answers at the push of a button. So I find when I’m talking to a 19-year-old, and I’m like ‘Dude I don’t know if that’s such a good idea or not’, he’s all ‘Well, actually I’ve done some research and blah, blah, blah…’ Well fuck, they know better than I do! Fuckin’ go for it!”
Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, and The mother fucking Bennies will be touring nationally in September & October.
