Velma Grove - Head For Heart EP (31/10/2012)
Recorded over Summer in the home of Maxie Roberts, Head For Heart is the debut EP of Velma Grove. Initially created as a pet project by the Melbourne singer/songwriter, word of mouth and increased demand eventually saw the EP released publicly.
Opening track Criminals In The Night kicks off the EP with confidence, particularly evident through Maxie’s vocals. Juxtaposed with the use of a snare drum as a backing beat, it’s the perfect introduction to the Head For Heart EP.
With Hollow, Velma Grove has crafted a unique and mellow tune with a dream-like ambience, which draws the listener in. Along with this atmospheric resonance, Hollow is backed by gentle acoustics and completed with five-piece ominous harmonies. It’s captivating.
Title track Head For Heart sees Maxie blend gorgeous acoustics with gentle with emotional harmonies. The high notes scattered throughout add elegance to the track, providing a distinct highlight on the EP.
Elsewhere, Never Cry evokes emotions through the simple use of an acoustic guitar, while Higher Ground draws the EP to a close. While Maxie’s vocals shine through here, it’s an instrumentally upbeat tune which not only bookends a wonderful debut record, but also leaves the listener anticipating more.
Blending blissful instrumentals that intertwine with Maxie’s melancholic vocals, Velma Grove’s Head For Heart EP provides the perfect late night soundtrack for those moments of solitude.
