Twenty One Pilots, D at Sea @ The Metro Theatre, Sydney (09/08/2014)
As night set upon The Metro Theatre, a bustling street saw many faithful fans wait patiently for what would be the first headlining tour for an amazing duo from the States. Twenty One Pilots would wow the crowd with a dynamic live persona that set the mosh pit ablaze with fierce enthusiasm.
As their support D At Sea took a different approach for the night. The juxtaposition of the two performances provided a blended experience that catered to the many music enthusiast of the night. To start off the night, D At Sea opened with Last Day, an apt forerunner for the vibe that you get from this performer. Choosing to start off a good portion of his set with his acoustic back catalogue, D At Sea felt no pressure to resort to stage gimmicks to gain the attention of the crowd. |
Coming off as a soft and chilled performer, on occasion the cheers of the crowd would match, if not overwhelm the sounds coming from the stage. Luckily, the remaining numbers came straight from his new release Anchors & Diamonds and with it there was an uplift in the density of the performance. Now laced with backing tracks, live drumming and a direct focus on vocals, D At Sea finished with Anchors & Diamonds which was a strong transition from the beginning of his set to a portion of the energy the crowd could expect from their main players of the night.
With one of the quickest swap overs ever, Twenty One Pilots launched straight into their performance with Guns For Hands enticing the crowd with their popular melodies and vibrant strange presence. For a band undergoing their first headlining tour here in Australia, the duo did not disappoint.
Without the staples of a traditional band providing more members to draw you in, there was a sense of untold pressure to keep up the energy throughout the show and maintain the crowd’s attention. To combat his, Tyler Joseph made damn sure that no aspect of the stage avoided with him as he leapt from the piano to the vast reaches of the stage and back again.
With a set that involved backflips, hybrid mixes of their latest tracks (example, mixing House of Gold with Van Morrison’s Brown Eye Girl) and an ecstatic audience, Twenty One Pilots powered through into the late hours of the night and from the general feeling of the night. Everyone who was present at The Metro Theater could have partied all night with this amazing duo.
That was probably the one thing that shook me up the most, that between Tyler’s pop infused raps and Josh’s hypnotic drumming. These two musicians are arising as a competitive force in their genre that is usually comprised of some many more people trying to succeed in the same sense as these two.
Ending the set with the atmospheric track Trees as the song progressed, it was clear how much these boys enjoy the performance they gave and for what they accomplished up to this point, they should be congratulated. Hopefully this party inducing pair has realized how strong their fan base is in this country and will endeavor to come out as often as they can.
