Tuka - Feedback Loop (15/12/2012)
As one third of the so-hot-right-now hip-hop crew Thundamentals, Tuka certainly doesn't need to pursue solo projects to keep himself busy. Thunda's innovative Like A Version cover of Matt Corby's Brother is bound to earn them a very respectable place in the upcoming Hottest 100.
This success with Thunda has not stopped Blue Mountains-based MC Tuka from pursuing his individual ambitions, or from crafting and perfecting a sophomore LP while flying solo.
Feedback Loop has two singles on high rotation at Triple J, but it's worth noting the rest of the album contains a generous handful of songs bound to follow as radio hits.
The debut single of the album Just To Feel Wanted is funky-fast and rests on a riff that is infectious and immediately familiar. Die A Happy Man, featuring the vocal stylings of The Herd's Jane Tyrrell is a calmer cut, showcasing the MC's confident handle of mellow hip-to-the-hop that will warm you inside with an ambient-trip-jazz chorus.
Feedback Loop will not disappoint fans of Aussie hip-hop or of boundary-pushing concept albums. The singles are not indicative of the sweet soul to be found on Alibi or the acid-jazz electronica of Harps. The vocals on Next Door are lush and rich, with background harmonies that add a retro-sampled spice that is nice as pie.
Lucky the dude has some seriously ambitious energy and time-management skills, because he's likely to be busy MC-ing for a fair while yet.
