Trey Songz - Chapter V (21/11/2012)
Since their mixture, it is undeniable that R&B has incorporated the Electronica genre into it’s own. This is most evident in artists such as Usher, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown teaming and producing singles with Calvin Harris and David Guetta. But, Trey Songz on the other hand has denied the road that so many other artists have taken and instead chosen to remain faithful to his R&B roots. Now with the release of his newest album: ‘Chapter V’, had Songz finally decided to take up the bandwagon and submerge traits of the electronica genre into his music?
After the release of ‘Passion, Pain and Pleasure’, Trey Songz has attained legions of new fans and in the process, skyrocketing his status to further fame. And despite his transition into a more mainstream artist, he somehow managed to true to the music that made him into the artist he is today.
As such the beat found in many of Trey Songz, songs (Ignore the double pun) is a refreshing change from the usual hybrid sound of other artists. If anything the greatest component about Chapter V, is its ability retain that slow smoothful anthemic beat that had been lost in the wave of electronic sounds slowly consuming traditional R&B.
As for Songz insightfulness for his lyrics, that remains an entirely different story. Love and relationships would be the best to describe a ‘John Legend’ album. Love and relationships can also be described for Chapter V, but to do so you must throw in ‘sex’ at every single song made for the album. While sex is an amazing topic to sing about, when you place the topic in every single song of the album, the repetition begins to define the lyrics.
While I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter V and most certainly ‘Playin’ Hard’ and ‘Simply Amazing’, when writing his lyrics Trey Songz must look a bit deeper and carry his words with much more brevity. But, I do praise Songz for not following other his other respective artists and staying true to the R&B genre.
