Thirty Seconds To Mars - Love Lust Faith + Dreams (03/06/2013)
Thirty Seconds To Mars’ fourth studio album Love Lust Faith + Dreams has lived up to the grandeur and theatrics that we have come to except from the band.
From literally sending a copy of their lead single Up In The Air into space to the extravagance of the music and lyrics videos released alongside the album, Thirty Seconds To Mars have once again gone beyond what seems possible.
Opening the album with a stunning introduction track, Birth brings the power and extravagance of the album out from the first not. Birth builds into an intense and instrument driven song that would find its place in the soundtrack of many films.
The track creates a brilliant lead in to Conquistador, a radio friendly and rather theatrical alt-rock anthem single off the album. The song boasts a massive chorus with even bigger moments of mass chanting that fits in with the powerful drums and strong riffs.
The album’s lead single and third track Up In The Air is carried by the pounding synths and screeching guitars that blend with the powerful drum rythms. Jared Leto’s ability to provoke a strong emotional connection through his vocals is perfectly fitting with the lyrics of the track, creating a stunning sense of intimacy while still maintain a radio and dance-floor friendly track.
The experimentation that Thirty Seconds to Mars have been toying with throughout the album is highlighted on the fourth track City Of Angels. Despite playing as one of the more subtle songs on the album, the replacement of their usual driving rock rhythms with an electronic beat along with their use of keys and strings creates a memorable track. The lyrics capture the album’s title in its entirety with Leto singing about his journey to find a place in the city of angels and finally discovering his faith.
End Of All Days and Bright Lights follow the mellower tone of City of Angels with both featuring similar electronic beats and string tracks. End Of All Days opens with a simple piano followed by Leto’s vocals creating a beautiful piano ballad before building to a climax of electronic beats, strings and vocals. Bright Lights is a more upbeat track with the electronic rhythm and synths steadily building up from the opening of the track.
Continuing the band’s experimentation, The Race includes a heavy industrial beat taken fresh from almost any Nine Inch Nails track, but manages to find its place within the album. The song itself has an interesting mix of styling from their previous album This Is War as well as their newer takes on electronic and industrial rock. On an album mix and match songs and experimentation, this track is definitely one to look out for.
Overall, Love Lust Faith + Dreams is an interesting and rather original album from Thirty Seconds To Mars that captures their extravagant style and familiar alt-rock rhythms along with an opportunity for exploration into different styles.
