The Universal - Thrill House (06/11/2012)
It has been a pretty big year for the four piece indie rock band The Universal.
The beginning of the year saw the band perform at Moomba Festival, supported by the likes of Snakadaktal, Regurgitator and Art Vs Science. Recently getting off a national tour in support of indie pop band The Jungle Giants, the band are truly making a name for themselves throughout the Australian Indie scene.
From the heart of Geelong and Melbourne, The Universal has just released their new-fangled EP Thrill House, which shows a promising sound for the future.
With the infectious sounds of a new single, the guys unleash the opening track Sexual Intellectual. Disrupting the hypnotic drum beat is the catch cry of ‘Sexual Intellectual’. Body twitching guitars and busting bass lines drive this song to the point of toe tapping brilliance.
In an aurally gratifying form, Evan Jones’ vocal style is on the exciting brink of British Punk and blissful melody. The strong, bustling rhythm section drives the band along with a layer of jingled guitar riffs and pure energy.
Drink It Down is a perfect song to close the four track EP. Rather melancholic, this track truly shows the diversity of tone colour opposed to the previous tracks of the EP. The simplistic guitar lines are married to the vocal melodies, proving to be the highlight of the EP.
Reminiscent of fun sunny days and cider, this four track EP has a lot to offer and holds up to be a solid release in the current Australia Indie Rock scene. I can’t wait to see where the boys will take their music next.
