The Sheriffs - Hookers (09/12/2012)
Melbourne novelty country rock band, The Sheriffs have recorded their 2nd album, Hookers, the follow up to their 2011 album, Sundance Romance.
According to lead vocalist and guitarist Andrew Tolley, the album’s title comes from a tattoo that two band members have and also refers to several songs on the album with twangy guitar sections or ‘hooks’.
A unique aspect of The Sheriffs is the fact that all members feature as vocalists at times, which creates a variety of different tracks. The first two tracks, Introduction and The Sheriffs Theme, illustrate the quirky nature of the independent group.
John Francis, a song about love, is a highlight of the album. “John Francis is the story of a girl who lost the plot after being rejected by our drummer, Andy,” Tolley said. “It was the fallout of a hot blooded love triangle.”
Leonard Cohen Blues is a chilled out track that allows for appreciation of the instruments used by the band. Vocals do not seem to be the focus in this track but it is nonetheless a good listen. The combination of guitar riffs and a drumbeat is pieced together nicely in Sundance, making it another exceptional track from the group. Rattle Snake Skin Blues is a perfect ending to the album with its mellow beat and smooth vocals.
It is The Sheriffs relaxed vibe that is the key to their music, as displayed by drummer Andy Howard’s take on the group. “We're all a bunch of wankers with no friends so we attempt to write country albums because we're not good enough to write real music,” he said. “I think most of our mums kind of enjoy our music because it's not metal.”
