The Mornings – Ribbons (28/05/2013)
The six piece band, formerly known as Samuel Cole and The Mornings, has released their latest album Ribbons after putting a lot of effort into the production.
The Mornings has already completed two national tours in 2012, but already have twenty three tours lined up across Australian and New Zealand. With the band doing their first ever appearances in Western Australian and the Northern Territory.
The Tasmanian bands touring didn’t stop there, with the band also making appearances in 2012 at The Falls Festival & the Soundscape Festival in Tasmania, as well as the Festival Of The Sun in NSW.
The Mornings frontman, Samuel Cole, has worked with the likes of Wally De Backer (Gotye) and Adalita Srsen for song writing workshops at the 2012 Song Summit Music Conference.
Taking these news experiences into consideration, the band has turned out a great album. Four of the tracks on the album are from 2011 and 2012. But luckily, the album also has three new songs, as well as a music video for Bleeding Knees & Salt which was recently released.
The overall album is quite folky, with the saxophone and violin bringing a fuller sound. Cole’s vocals have a rusty sound to them, which is both full of passion and pain.
Released in 2011, About Time is a slow ballad with the chorus of the song being extremely heartfelt and a little bit addictive. Pleasure was also released in 2011, the track showcases the violin player Anna Elliston’s talent. The chorus has an infection sound with the piano playing of band member Seth Henderson.
Released in 2012 was the track Wine On The Carpet, probably one of the better songs released by The Mornings. The piano and guitar complement each other well over Cole’s rusty vocals. Flights & Fails was released in 2012, it is an uplifting track with Cole’s vocals along with the folksy sound making a good song.
Smoke & Lasers is a slow folksy song, with a good integration of the violin and saxophone (Nick Devereux), which oddly work well together. This track however, is a little sub-par and has nothing that keeps one wanting to listen to it again. The same is unfortunately said about Telescope, while the techniques used in the song are good, it also just doesn’t have anything that keeps you coming back for more. Bleeding Knees & Salt is a good little song, a sweet violin line and passionately sung chorus.
The album released by The Mornings, is a nice album. But the recent track releases is not at exciting as one would hope. But they still have made an album that holds some great past tracks, some good new songs and also showcases some fantastic potential.
