The Gracemakers - The Gracemakers (26/04/2012)
A mixing pot of different ethnicities and backgrounds, Tiffany Kommedal and Kent Morris are a recipe that makes up The Gracemakers, a delicious duo that exudes happiness and sweetness from every chord they strum and word they sing.
A collection of four airey and effervescent songs, the EP is minimalistic, with Morris’ guitar and Kommedal’s vocals being the main focus throughout the songs. However, his is not to the record’s detriment. Rather, it creates a sound of delightful simplicity that feels like a fresh summer breeze. Persistent folk rock melodies are perfectly coupled with narratives of love, friendship and endeavors of the heart.
Opening track ‘Blanket’ is truly enchanting. The song works well to create a feeling of youthfulness and play through soft drumbeats and a beautifully delicate xylophone melody. Kommeadal’s angelic voice warms your soul as she confesses her intentions to “wrap you up in a blanket”; a statement that invokes memories of fond embrace with loved ones.
Another standout for the EP comes in the form of ‘Shooting Stars’, a falsetto-sung track that shines with its upbeat tempo and message. This addictively bright tune will certainly be one that stays with you.
Whilst this record is gorgeously sweet and uplifting, it has a considerable negative concerning the similarities between the four songs. Unfortunately, the tracks do sound quite familiar to each other, which maybe could be the downfall of the simple production. However, this discretion is more than forgiven, as the songs are just too joyful.
This delectable and delicate duo have not only created four gorgeous songs, they have captured the soul of summer, a feat that must be experienced to be appreciated.
