The City Lights - I Just Got To Believe (31/10/2012)
The City Lights are a punk rock band from Sydney. Their latest album I Just Got To Believe will be released on the 10th of November.
The first song and title track I Just Got to Believe starts off with a deep base riff before progressing into the City Lights style of 70’s punk rock.
The band are influenced by acts such as the Clash, the Jam, The Who, The Kinks, The Stems (any band with a 'the' in front of their name) which becomes very evident in Hong Kong Control and Without People You're Nothing.
The guitar chords are short, the riffs are repetitive and catchy and the music is fast paced in the old 70's punk rock style. The lyrics are simple and shouting is used as background in the choruses. The keyboard is a good addition to add a little point of difference in their music and differentiates them a little bit from the old punk rockers.
There unfortunately isn’t anything new here. Their style is so similar to the old punk rockers that there isn't really anything setting them a part that would gain them any really big exposure. If you wanted to listen to this sort of music, you could listen to the clash or the Ramones. The music is fine, but they hopped on the bandwagon a little too late.
However, after saying that, the album is fun and upbeat. If you are a fan of classic 70's punk rock give it a go.
You can catch the album launch at the Old Bar in Melbourne on the 10th of November.
