The Black Rainbows - Supermothafuzzalicious!! (27/09/2012)
Describing themselves as heavy, psych stoner rock n roll, Italian trio The Black Rainbows have unleashed their third album, the awesomely titled ‘Supermothafuzzalicious!!’. A blend of alternative sounds influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath and Queens of the Stone Age, their latest offering is an unexpectedly refreshing blast from the past.
Most of the tracks follow a similar vein; it seems the band’s signature sound comes in the form of brilliantly catchy hooks and riffs, which are then broken up by solid guitar licks and fretwork, showcased perfectly in tunes such as ‘Behind the line’ and ‘Mother of the Sun’ . Other tracks like ‘Lady’ and ‘Brain Circles’, serve to highlight the fluid skill of guitarist, founder and vocalist Gabriele Fiori.
Swirling, whirring 70’s like psychedelic effects are thrown in to the mix in tracks ‘Mastermind’, ‘Solar System’ and ‘Feel the Beat’, along with alternating shifts in tempo from fast paced frantic drumming courtesy of drummer Daniele Conti , to slower resonating bass delivered by Marco De Masi. The changes in dynamic keep the momentum of the music going whilst holding the listener’s interest.
There is so much to like about ‘Supermothafuzzalicious!!’. The combination of epic riffage, precarious soloing, wailing vocals, smashed drums and funky bass lines just screams old school at you and leaves you sub consciously nodding your head along with the beat every single time. The Black Rainbows have created something really pleasing to the ear and joyfully nostalgic, whilst moving forward with their song writing skills and capabilities as a band. The experience of a lot of shows played and a full discography is there and should be enjoyed as much as the band sounds like they’re enjoying themselves. Supermothafuzzalicious!!’ is not only fun to say, it’s a hell of a lot of fun to listen to.
