The Bedroom Philosopher @ The Thornbury Theatre (24/06/11)
Let me describe a paradox for you. You’re in a hall full of hipsters; empty frame glasses, drainpipe pants, curled fringes, canvas bags with laptops in them, serious fucking hipsters. Hipsters so hip that some of them actually avoided the gaze of the act on stage, hipsters so hip that not once but twice I saw moustaches being twirled around fingers, hipsters so fucking hip that beer was being drunk ironically.
Yet on stage was an extremely funny musical comedian singing, I’m So Post-Modern. Not only was I feeling like everyone was there to prove something I felt like somewhere an ancient law of existence was being broken and in that instant I fell into an inescapable vortex of unaware self-awareness that sucked out my eyeballs and replaced them with the Animal Collective discography.
On a serious note I implore you all to check out The Bedroom Philosopher aka Justin Heazlewood any chance you can. He’s on of the very best comedians working Australia today let alone the undisputed champion of humorous acoustic rock in Melbourne. Not many musical comedians are able to strike such a balance between musicianship and comedic excellence which is what makes watching Heazlewood perform such a revelation and riot.
Do yourself a favor and go see The Bedroom Philosopher as he tours the country or as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, at the very least you won’t be as post-modern the next day and let’s face it that’s what this whole 2012 thing’s about.
