Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob (21/03/2013)
Canadian duo Tegan & Sara’s latest LP Heartthrob is their sixth record in their thirteen year career.
“No one will confuse this with any of our other records,” Sara says. “It’s got a bigger, bolder, happier sound.”
And Sara was right.
Heartthrob, which the Canadian identical twins will be unveiling songs from for Australians at Groovin’ the Moo in April/May, is definitely a step in a different direction.
This new sound can be heard from the first song Closer. The use of electronic influences spans throughout the whole album. It has similar riffs and sounds to other bands such as Naked and Famous, Crystal Castles and even a hint of The Wombats.
For just a mere second, I even confused the beginning of I Couldn’t Be Your Friend for Grizzly Bears Two Weeks. The song however, is super catchy and their vocals are awesome as usual.
Their new sound compliments their voices well and is super catchy, but the album as a whole is a slightly underwhelming. Now that they are using similar sounds that too many other bands already use, there is not a lot in their music that makes it that different, new or exciting for these times. While it's a different sound for Tegan and Sara, it's not so fresh when you compare it with today's music. The song lyrics all seem to revolve around love and are fairly cliché; and many of the songs featured are fairly repetitive in style and sound.
However, there is no doubt in my mind that Tegan and Sara's new music will translate well into a live setting, and will no doubt compliment their live set list with their older material.
