Sydonia - Waiting for Words That Don’t Exist (06/11/2012)
Sydonia have a tendency to be one of those bands that many find difficult to specifically categorise in Melbourne’s hard rock and metal scene. Waiting for Words That Don’t Exist, the newly released DP (DVD/EP) bears some of their strongest and diverse work yet.
Opening track TL, throws the listener straight into vocalist Dana Roskvist’s catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Pulsing rhythms and an unbelievable chorus line keeps eager listeners banging their heads and singing along contagiously.
Second track Words consists of pure energy, a rumbling bass line and a gut punching drum beat. Definitely one of the heaviest tracks of the DP, it is to be featured on the upcoming full length album.
Oceans of Storms was previously released a few years ago as a single, but it still stands as one of my favourites songs from the Melbourne four piece. Glorious vocal melodies and Sean Bailey’s drumming style is highlighted; showing how the rhythm and percussion section are a vital role in this band.
Closing the DP is the Nine Inch Nails-esque track Unkindness. Proving that Sydonia have a few tricks up their sleeve, the song flourishes in to something that resembles a tranquil dream on the curious brink of chaos. Sydonia showing their flexibility as musicians and composers, bring the track to a gentle fade out to peacefully close the five track release.
It has been a six year wait from their last full length album release; Waiting for Words That Don’t Exist is just a taste to tie you over to the second album. Hopefully the sophomore album will be released in the near future. Keep your ears to the ground, Sydonia are set for greater things.
