Sures (04/09/2013)
Ahead of their tour with Go Violets this September, and fresh off the release of their new EP The Night Hero Waste Time Getting Better, we chat with Sures.
Thanks for chatting to The 59th Sound. You’ve just released your new EP ‘The Night Hero Waste Time Getting Better’, how does it feel?
Good I guess. It’s only just starting to get out there and just starting to get some radio play, it’s good to finally get another release out, we haven’t released anything since April last year because we were constantly playing shows and didn’t have time so it feels good to finally have another release out there.
Because you were so busy gigging how did that affect the recording process?
It affected the speed in which we released material but we didn’t really stress about that, we wanted to keep on playing as many shows as possible off the back of that release to give us more time to work in studio and mature as a band and see where we ended up at the end of it all and it took a full year until we started working on this release.
The lead single ‘Waste’ has received a lot of radio support, have you heard it on the radio yet?
The first time it was premiered I was pretty excited and got the metro home in time to hear it on the radio and how it was sounding and that’s the only time I’ve heard it on the radio actually, I don’t listen to the radio as much as I’d like.
How did you react when you first heard it?
I don’t know, I think I was just happy it was on the radio.
So there was no parties to celebrate?
No, no, it was on a week day and I’d just gotten home from work, it’s the sort of thing that makes your day after a shitty day at work.
When you were in the studio and writing this EP did you know this was single material?
It actually came as a surprise to me, at the demo stages I just didn’t see it as a single at all. I knew that our management and all of the people around us liked it and it one of the songs that people would comment on after shows, I didn’t really see it as a single until we recorded it recently. We had done recordings with other people and it just didn’t sound like a single until we recorded it recently.
The film clip for WASTE is intense, yet simple, how did you come up with the idea?
That’s all the director William Colvin. He’s a pretty special director actually. He’s a new comer, he’s only just getting started, he’s only directed one film clip before, it was a weird one actually, something you’d expect to see in an adult film, he’s got a pretty dry humor but our manager actually saw the video and thought he’d be a really cool but weird pair up and he (William) was pretty inspired and put a lot of effort into it so it was cool.
Sures are quite young of age, what was the first band that you saw live?
I should say it’s embarrassing but I’m not even embarrassed by it, Dashboard Confessional.
That’s not embarrassing at all, I’m a huge fan.
I was put down a lot in year 9 for being emo and that was around the time that emo was coping a lot of slack but that was the kind of music I was into.
I’m still an emo fan, I appreciate it.
I’m still into Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday.
And there is a strong 90s influence to the Sures sound, like you said Jimmy Eat World and even Weezer, did you know listen to those bands as a young music fan that’s the direction you wanted to take as a musician?
I think a lot of these bands took an accidental influence on me because what we started out doing was very different to this 90s, early thousands post punk sound that we’ve sort of adapted. I think I was just listening to a lot of these artists growing up in high school and when it got to the time of me being in a band and making music it’s just what came out as I’d listened to those bands growing up.
Sures are touring nationally to support the new release, it’s quite a big tour what are you looking forward to most on this tour?
Oh man that’s a really hard question. We haven’t been touring that heavily this year and we’re just keen to get back into it and I think one of the best things is meeting new people from different cities and different places and eating somewhere new, just the simple stuff really, it’s just heaps fun.
It sounds like you could write a travel blog, you seem to experience the culture of the city.
Definitely if we had more time. At the beginning of the year we had one show in Melbourne and we were all on holidays and we took a mad break, we went camping at the Grampians, it’s on the way to Adelaide, it’s a big mountain region with waterfalls and mad track and stuff, have you been there?
No I haven’t, it sounds beautiful. Moving forward is that something the band’s working towards, working holidays?
Definitely. Whenever we have time we like to sight see. This tour we’re driving to all of the venues, should be fun. It means we get to stop over at a whole bunch of places on the way and suss out op-shops, good food and a whole bunch of stuff, it’s lots of fun.
Yes, it sounds it and we do look forward to the tour, not only for the live shows but now looking forward to chatting to you guys and discovering the best places to visit in Australia.
We will keep you posted I might start a food blog.
