Sophie Rose - The Lies We Tell Ourselves (13/08/2013)
Opening with a smooth and sweet voice, The Lies We Tell Ourselves by Melbourne based Kiwi artist Sophie Rose hooks you in with its simplicity. Needing nothing more than a guitar and a touch of piano and accordion to accompany her vocal arrangements Rose really shines as a solo artist in this EP.
The EP’s first track Douchebag treats us with some gutsy and fun lyrics (as you might expect by looking at its title). The rhythmic strumming of the acoustic guitar provides the song’s backbone and gives the song its power. The harmonies fit in really nicely and add more depth to the song.
Chanson features the most infectious guitar of any of the tracks. It almost distracts you from the fact that the vocals are not in English, a quality unique to this track. Seven adds a dark twist with its aggressive guitar and haunting vocals while remaining tracks I Know and Sum Of Your Youth have no real flaws but aren’t particularly stand out songs.
Responsible for all the instrumentation, Sophie Rose manages to make guitar and vocals really interesting and a joy to listen to. The Lies We Tell Ourselves is not groundbreaking in any way nor particularly unique. However, it does showcase a lot of talent and promise. Anybody can pick up a guitar and sing but not many can leave you satisfied like Sophie Rose has with this release.
