Winning the Triple J Unearthed High competition against 700 other high school bands must have been amazing. How was the experience for you guys?
It was brilliant, really great and an opening into the media side of music. The competition has done a huge amount for us in such a short time and we will always be thankful for that.
The Living End was invited to play at your school for the Unearthed winners’ gig. How was it to meet those guys and did they give you any tips?
Unfortunately we didn’t really get to speak to them, just a quick “hello.” But we learnt a lot from just watching them perform and setting up.
You went into Triple J soon after to record some songs. Was it all a big learning experience?
Yeah really big, huge actually, we learnt an awful lot. Where we recorded our EP (At home) and where we re-recorded our single ‘Air’ were quite different. It was a giant environmental change, like from the Desert to the South Pole. We had a really nice time and ate some tasty noodles.
It seems to have really thrown you guys head first into the music industry. Do you feel like there’s more pressure on the band now and how do you cope with this?
There’s differently more pressure on the band then there was 8 mouths ago. But we don’t really think about it. We just do what we can in the moments that are given to us, and hope that the audience and us can enjoy these times.
You recently brought out the band’s debut EP. What has the reaction to it been like?
It’s been fantastic, we really couldn’t have asked for more. The public has been incredibility kind.
So can we expect your full length LP soon?
Within the year we will have another release, either a LP or EP. So if an EP this year, next year there will be an album.
You’re playing Pushover Festival in March. That must be a pretty big thing for band, are you guys nervous?
We’re not nervous, just excited and grateful to play it front of a large, loud crowd. It will also be a chance to play to the younger folks who have been supporting us.
Which other bands are you most looking forward to seeing there? And then there’s the recently announced national tour. That must be a huge step up for the band to play those larger venues?
Alpine, they have a beautiful sound. Yeah this tour is a huge step for us in many ways, one being the larger venues. Some people missed out last tour due to the size of the venues and we don’t wont to disappoint people again by missing out on tickets.
How do you think being together on the road for so long will affect the friendships in the band?
I guess we will all just really hate one another! This wont have much affect towards us, spending everyday day together is what we have done for the last five years due to school. So putting up with each other is very usual for us. So being on the road wont change our relationships.
