Sleeping with Sirens, Memphis May Fire, Woe is Me @ The Hi-Fi Bar, Melbourne (27/02/2013)
The Hi-Fi was packed by post - hardcore fans, who came for a little taste of what they would get at Soundwave. After a line that was so long that people were left queuing half way through the first act, Woe, is Me, everyone left the venue satisfied.
After going to another sidewave at the Hi-Fi on Monday, the room seemed twice as full and at least 6 times as loud. The crowd were seemingly a combination of classic metal-core fans moshing hard and fangirls waiting to get a glimpse of Sleeping with Sirens vocalist Kellin Quinn.
Woe, is Me got the night started with D-Day and the mosh and circle pit started very quickly. The six piece from Atlanta has gained a pretty big fan base in such a short time and the people in the room were loving the heavy distorted riffs, as well as Michael Bohn’s deep growls and loud screams. They played a Kesha cover of We r Who We R and a snippet of Gangnam Style before finishing up with I’ve Told You Once and Vengeance.
Although not the headline act for the night, Memphis May Fire definitely had the best response by the pit. From the first song Without Walls, Matt Mullins had everyone in the venue mesmerised by his clean vocals, screams and awesome movement around stage. The whole band had an awesome ability to move to the heavy beats and the people in the mosh really fed off what the band was doing on stage. If Matt Mullins said jump, everyone jumped.
Losing Sight featured a guest appearance by Kellin Quinn (to the cheers of hundreds of girls, who were undressing him with their eyes). Between songs, Matt told the crowd what certain songs were about. The Deceived was about someone that you once loved but wasn’t worth it and Prove me Right was about a former record company that didn’t believe in them. Memphis May Fire played an awesome set and I will be definitely seeing them again at Soundwave.
When Sleeing With Sirens came on stage and Kellin Quinn cloaked himself in an Australian flag before putting it on his microphone stand the screams from the fan-girls were deafening. (I say this in the least offensive way possible, but) Kellin Quinn is like the Justin Bieber in terms of the effect he has on alternative girls. They kicked their set off with Do It Now Remember It Later and With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear before playing Scene Two – Roger Rabbit from their acoustic album and continued with Fall Asleep at The Helm encouraging everyone to get lighters or phones out.
Kellin told the crowd “That was for the girls, this one’s for the guy’s” and pumped into Tally it Up, Settle the Score with a guest appearance from Matt Mullins which got the circle pits started once again. Between one of the songs somebody in the crowd made a really high pitched noise, (similar to the mosquito noise everyone used to make on their phones that adults can’t hear) Kellin stopped the beginning of their last song and asked the person to make the noise again. The look on his face was priceless when he saw it was a guy who made the noise before saying “I know how you feel buddy”.
In the middle of the encore Kellin told the crowd he would sing the song whilst the crowd held him up on some conditions including “no touching of the genitals”. He crawled along the crowd and then they held him up whist he exaggerated the chorus of song If You’re James Dean, I’m Audrey Hepburn.
My only little gripe with the set is that all of the bands played for a pretty short time, however all three bands put on a really great show and if you see them at Soundwave you won’t be disappointed.
