Skyscraper Stan and the Commission Flats – Tall Stories (28/04/2014)
Perhaps the greatest touch to this album is the lyrical stories. It’s strength lies in its ability to draw you in almost seamlessly and become almost invested in the overall arc of each song. For example, from the opening track ‘Oil City, One Step’, a line goes “Bleeding down the hallway comes another song and I’m watching traffic with my road boots on.” Another instance would be from ‘Moses’, where words go, “Freedom have gone out of fashion, reason has gone out on loan, the good book has gone out of business, god only smokes when his drinkin’ and god only drinks alone.” The ability to illustrate these words perfectly creates the illusion that you are immersed in a sweaty hotel foyer in Louisiana.
The standout aspect about the band is that they’re inching out every possible corner that they consider different. Unique in their own way, ‘Tall Stories’ creates a sound shrouded in ambiguity. Carrying lyrics that usher in a setting that most listeners are unused to. Bands often play for different reason, but the most common is for their fans to dance and have fun, nevertheless this album is no different.
