Silverstein, Sienna Skies @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne (19/04/2013)
Many Silverstein fans have been waiting over two years to see the boys from Burlington Canada play again. After releasing their latest record This is How the Wind Shifts, Melbourne’s favourite venue the Corner Hotel played host to fans eager to hear some fresh Silverstein in a live setting. But really, most were hanging out to their old stuff and to recreate the nostalgic feeling they had listening albums like Discovering the Waterfront during their teenage years.
Sydney-based metalcore outfit Sienna Skies opened for the main act. I really liked the band as a whole; they had a really good live presence and put on a really great show. They are a bit generic though, their sound and lyrics is very reminiscent of Memphis May Fire and the keyboard player even dressed and had the same haircut as Matt Mullins (minus the bright red hair). They were still very entertaining and had the crowd buzzing for Silverstein.
The Corner Hotel has a curtain that hides what the crew are doing on stage beforehand. I really like this about the venue; it makes the intermission a little less distracting. They opened the curtains and the boys walked on from the side of the stage and blasted On Brave Mountains We Conquer. Straight away, the energy they put into the first song was awesome. Vocalists Shane Told’s movement around stage while keeping his vocals perfect was really impressive; almost as impressive as guitarists Josh Bradford’s curly moustache that sat upon his constant smile
I really liked the combination of new and old Silverstein the band played. The songs from This Is How the Wind Shift kept the night fresh and new whilst the old songs really got the crowd moshing. Your Sword Vs My Dagger, Vices and Massachusetts were received the best during the normal set.
After the encore, Shane came back on stage by himself and an electric guitar. He told the crowd that he was going to sing Call it Karma which was a song he wrote when he lived by himself in California. He looked really comfortable with the guitar, although I prefer him with just the microphone (which is very rare, well done Shane).
The setlist was perfect and they definitely stepped it up in the encore, with their last three songs being their best. They finished off with My Heroine which is probably their most well-known song and Smile in Your Sleep. The latter, Smile in Your Sleep has been one of my favourite songs for such a long time and I was so excited to see it live.
Silverstein are a band are prolific at recording and touring so expect them to come back to Australia either next year or the one after. I wouldn’t hesitate to see them again, with this gig being one of my personal top three of 2013.
