Sharks (17/10/2012)
We recently spoke Sam Lister from rising punk-rock outfit Sharks, who was excited to be playing at Soundwave in March next year. Sharks were asked to play at Soundwave after their Australian tour with Pennywise was cancelled due to Zoli Teglas's back injury. Sam said, "We are all really excited to be a part of it".
Sharks released their debut album No Gods in March earlier this year. Produced by Brian McTernan, the band recorded the album in Baltimore, USA for 5 weeks. They attribute The Clash as one of their biggest influences. "The Clash is rammed down your throat when you are a kid, we are all huge fans of that 70's rock scene. I think that was a big influence on us , although James is really into some American bands like social Destortion and the hardcore side of things with The Descendants and Black Flag. We are influenced by more than just the Clashy sort".
Sam says that he didn't know what to expect about recording in Baltimore because the T.V show The Wire made it look "nasty" but in the end it was an "awesome experience".
Sharks played at the Vans Warped Tour earlier this year. "Ah, it was long and quite draining by the end of it, but a really good experience. A really happy time for everyone. But It's tough, definitely a grind. You know it's 42 shows back-to-back and the drives are crazy long. It's s o hot! I am from England and the hottest I have ever known it in the summer is like 30 degrees or whatever and that's the coolest it was for the whole of the warp tour. But it was cool, a really good time and a really good atmosphere"
He was very glad when told that it wouldn't be that hot in March for Soundwave.
Sharks are excited to play alongside bands such as Gallows, Lucero, Fucked Up, Madball and Cyprus hill next year and also plan to do some sideshows "I think we definitely are, but we haven't had anything confirmed yet. I think that's the plan".
The boys from Leamington spa in the U.K haven't had their flights booked yet, but would love to for a bit longer to experience Australia. Sam says that he is most looking forward to seeing the wildlife and Hungary Jacks, as it is called Burger King around the rest of the world.
When Sam was told that some American's believe that we hop around in Kangaroo pouches he exclaimed; "Yeah! I am not going to try that, I have lots of respect for wildlife. But I really want to see a koala bear and a kangaroo as generic as it sounds. I hear at soundwave they have like crazypet guys that comes around that let you hold the animals."
While this interviewer wasn't sure about the pet guy, he does look forward to seeing Sam Lister, on drums with the Sharks at Soundwave next year.
