Scar The Martyr - Scar The Martyr (26/03/2014)
It's always intriguing when you hear about a new supergroup to see which high profile musicians are going to be in it. Scar The Martyr are the new heavy metal supergroup causing all the hype at the moment. Formed by former Slipknot drummer and former Murderdolls guitarist Joey Jordison (who recorded drums, rhythm guitar and bass for the album). The band also features former Strapping Young Lad guitarist Jed Simon, former Darkest Hour guitarist Kris Norris and former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna on keyboards. Relatively unknown Henry Derek has the tough job on vocals.
The self titled album kicks off with a minute long intro song called (unoriginally) Intro which sounds like it's straight out of a horror movie. That doesn't last long however as your ears are suddenly blasted by some brutal music as Dark Ages kicks off. Derek's haunting vocals do sound a little like Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor which definitely isn't a bad thing!
Shown on that first track alone is the power and range of Derek's vocals. Going from mellow type singing through to quite heavy screams it is a great mix and compliments the brilliant drumming by Jordison.
My Retribution is a true heavy metal song. Killer riffs. Screaming vocals. Brilliant drums. Jordison wrote a ripper here. The song has it all making it one of the many stand outs on the album.
Soul Disintegration and Blood Host are the two singles from the album so far. The first of which is a more mellower (vocally) song showing of Derek's voice a bit more whereas Blood Host has Slipknot written all over it which definitely isn't a bad thing! During parts of the choruses especially you could swear that Corey Taylor is singing them.
White Nights In A Day Room takes things down a bit to make a great hard rock song. Both times I've listened to this album Effigy Unborn has been the absolute stand out track. It's just an all round great metal song with a catchy as hell chorus and beat.
Scar The Martyr's debut album ticks all the right boxes making this a must listen for all fans of metal. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy!
