Rush - Headlong Flight (Single) - (28/05/2012)
With the coming release of their much-anticipated 20th studio album, Clockwork Orange, Rush has unleashed their second single, Headlong Flight.
Playing at just under 7 and a half minutes (with a 5 minute radio edit), this track plays as a perfect blend of their earlier heavy sound and the maturity that has developed over their years as a band.
Headlong Flight opens with Geddy Lee’s amp-shaking bass line, which creates a powerful counter-melody from the first note. The song builds from an explosive introduction by Neil Peart on the drums. Throughout the song, he maintains a classic rock rhythm, with moments of severe, modern rock rhythms to create a complex base to the song.
Alex Lifeson’s heavy riffs and distorted solos seem to control the chaos of this track by laying a powerful melody over the song. By topping it all off with Lee’s signature vocals and the strong lyrics leaves the track head and shoulders above what we have come to expect from the rock scene.
