_R.E.M. - Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982 - 2011 (09/12/2011)
_
For a band with a career spanning over 31 years, the title
of R.E.M.’s newest best-of seems truly
fitting. Band members Michael Stipe (singer), Peter Buck (guitarist), Mike
Mills (bassist) and Bill Berry (drummer) announced the news in September; they
had decided that it was time to “call it a day as a band”, announced via a
statement on their website.
The often-inevitable break-up of any band is a devastating thought to both loyal fans and music lovers everywhere. The thought that a band whose music has been responsible for many memories, road trip sing-along’s and often company for them throughout those times where there was none is a groundbreaking realisation at the very least. R.E.M. are a band that have taken the majority of their fans through three decades, and so the break-up would bring sadness to many who would have undoubtedly featured R.E.M. on the soundtrack to their lives for that period of time.
The band released 15 studio albums during their 31-year recording career, and the 40 songs featured on ‘Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011’ collects, for the first time, songs from R.E.M.’s back catalogue from both labels IRS (1982-1987) and later Warner Bros. Records (1988-2011). The compilation features some of the incredibly well known hits such as Losing My Religion, OrangeCrush, Shiny Happy People, Man On The Moon, Nightswimming, Imitation of Life,Bad Day and the incomparable, moving and continually celebrated Everybody Hurts.
Mike Mills, R.E.M.’s bassist, reflects on selecting the tracks for ‘Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011’;
“Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey,” said Mills.
“We realised that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.”
Their 31-year career has allowed the band to grow and develop, but also retain their classic sound, during three decades in a music world that has changed dramatically from decade to decade.
‘Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011’ is a must-have for any self-respecting music lover’s collection. R.E.M. are a truly talented and wonderful band who have offered the world some incredible music – Everybody Hurts in particular will hold a special place in most people’s hearts. 31 years is certainly nothing to sneeze at, and due credit goes to the band for creating consistently great music during that period that has allowed them to go out at the top of their game.
