Regina Spektor @ The Plenary, Melbourne (14/12/2012)
Regina Spektor live. To say that I was looking forward to this gig would be an understatement. I have been following Regina’s music for a number of years and have always felt a strong connection to her. I’m not too sure it is the fact that we both come from a Russian background, or the fact that she has a freakish resemblance to my cousin, but either way, I am convinced that under the right circumstances, we could infact be best friends (she just doesn’t know it yet).
On a miserably cold Friday night, a significant number of Melbournians congregated to collectively enjoy Regina Spektor play the shit out of the piano at one of Melbourne's younger music venues, The Plenary.
Spektor ran on stage with a big grin, sat down at the amazing grand piano began tapping rhymically on the microphone and singing Ain’t No Cover’which allowed her to introduce her powerful voice to the audience.
Throughout her ninety minute set, she played through her new album What We Saw From the Cheap Seats and some favourites from her other five albums such as Samson, Fidelity and On The Radio.
The best thing about Spektor’s music is that she isn’t afraid of sounding “ugly.” She treats the microphone like a toy, manipulating her voice to create a variety of colours and moods, ensuring her music never sounds the same.
Spektor ploughed through all her songs and allowed little room for audience interaction. This was unfortunate, as everyone in the room was clearly craving some, evident from the screaming of song requests or outburts of “I LOVE YOU, REGINA!” While this might be seen as a shortfall, I later realised that it’s simply not Regina’s style. The best way to determine her personality, is through her music. It is fun, bubbly, clever, comical and full of talent.
All in all, the gig was absolutely incredible and if you ever get a chance to see Regina Spektor live, I highly recommend you jump at the opportunity.
