Radiohead - Supercollider/The Butcher 12" (24/04/2011)
Radiohead - Supercollider/The Butcher 12"
Record store day saw the latest release from Radiohead appear on the shelves in limited stock around the world. A 12” vinyl release, it contained two tracks; Supercollider and The Butcher.
At just over seven minutes long, Supercollider is the better of the two tracks on this release. Started during The King of Limbs sessions, it wasn’t until March this year that the track was completed for release. It builds slowly, bass guitar prominent against the synths. Sit back and listen, the seven minutes pass quickly as the song becomes a part of the environment around the listener. That’s where Radiohead always come through. Their music can change the mood in the room within an instant, and Supercollider is no different, settling in and becoming an atmospheric soundtrack.
While many have said The King of Limbs ended abruptly, speculation was that the album was only half released and that we would be hearing more of it, a part two per say. Since it’s sudden appearance two months ago, Radiohead have stated that there won’t be a ‘sequel’ to the album. But included on this release, The Butcher is a cutting room floor track from The King of Limbs.
The style definitely fits with The King of Limbs, it was mixed during the albums sessions. Haunting and resounding, Yorke’s voice echoes throughout the drum and bass laced within the track. Ambient, it would have been a fitting inclusion on the album but Radiohead have since stated that they simply couldn’t make it work within the other tracks on the release.
Embrace this duo as another part of the album, estranged from the final release. Or simply think of them as severed limbs.
