Pigeon - Fortunes (19/12/2012)
Pigeon have already played a number of major festivals such as Splendor in the Grass and Parklife in 2011. The latest E.P Fortunes from the boys from Brisbane featured at the top of the electronic dance charts on iTunes and triple j.
The first song All That Bad has a very 80's sound to it and is about being abducted by aliens... It features a saxophone, which changes the mood of the song.
The second track Encounters is one of the highlights of the EP. The intro melody is reminiscent of one of the tunes on Donkey Kong Country which adds familiarity for anyone that used to play that game as a kid. The song is well structured, not too hard on the ears and is really damn catchy.
The Siren Song is a solid track and shows how much musical talent the boys have. However the beat is a big too slow to dance along to and the lyrics are too repetitive to really connect with the song. The mood or angle that Pigeon are going for seems to be a bit confused.
Oh Hebe really emphasises this confusion. The synth in this song is a bit obnoxious and drown overpower the rest of the music. Along with this vocal effects take away from Danny Harley's voice and the chorus seems to be shouting at the listener. It's a shame that this was the song they released, because there are many other great songs on the EP.
The Hunt is one of these great songs and it uses a combination of new music (synths, electronics) and classical music (piano) mediums effectively. The vocals blend into the music a little too much, but it doesn't really take away from the track.
Pigeon are definitely going in the right direction with Fortunes. Their musical talent really shines through, although they need to decide whether they are going to be and electronic dance outfit or something else. With a bit of polishing up Pigeon will undoubtedly find success in Australia and internationally.
