Pataphysics (07/11/2013)
Launching his new EP IED tomorrow at the Workers Club in Melbourne, The 59th Sound had a quick chat with local MC, Pataphysics.
Your sophomore release IED EP is out next week, how are you feeling right now in the lead up to the release? Relieved? Excited?
Very excited to release this EP, have spent a lot of time working on it. Have a heap going on so pretty much in work mode leading up to the launch, no time for relief yet. Looking forward to walking on the stage though.
When it came to writing and recording this record, did you have a clear idea of how the final product was going to turn out, or did it just sort of come together in the studio? I understand you recorded it at your own studio in Melbourne.
Well I went in with a clear idea of the direction. However in the studio sometimes you hear things and try things as you go, so there was a lot of that. I record out of my studio 9 Gates, which is set up with a lot of analogue gear to best get sound and aesthetic I want.
Hip-hop in Australia has quite a strong following, and you've toured with the likes of 360, and M-Phases, as well as playing Falls Festival in 2008. What were these experiences like for you?
Yeah I really enjoy playing live, its one of the best parts of being a musician. Playing with these acts and at big festivals is always fun and sometimes a huge rush.
What do you think music fans can do to keep the Australian hip hop scene alive and thriving?
Keep going to she shows and buying the music. The music scene is dependent on the people who come to the shows and listen to the music. Having venues for upcoming acts is really important. We have seen the live music scene in Melboutrne take a hit with some great venues shutting down and noise restriction laws coming in that favor high rise apartments.
You also won a Mercury prize in 2009, did you find that this award helped open new doors in the industry for you as an artist?
I just helped write a few songs, and the album they were on won, which was cool. Some people definitely see it as a big deal and can't believe it when they find out. As far as new industry doors thats a hard one to gauge.
Now I've read via Triple J Unearthed that you are the Music & Arts coordinator of R.I.S.E (Refugees, Survivors, and Ex-Detainees). Could you tell us a bit more about this program, and what it involves?
Well these days I help out running the music programs and the recording studio. On Saturday's I run the Cypher project which is a program that helps young artists with songwriting, recording and beat making. Get some really talented artists coming through.
Your launch show for IED is on the 8th at the Workers Club in Melbourne. For those who haven't seen you live before, how would you describe a Pataphysics’ gig?
Beats, Trumpet, Trumpet run through octave pedals and synths, Guitar, soulful vocals, double time militant raps, Sub Bass, Mpc jam's, projected surface mapped video shows..
Finally, what advice do you have for young MCs and musicians in general who are looking to get their break in the industry?
Just keep working on your craft and perfecting your skills. I think it's really important to have your own voice and sound. Don't cater for the popular sound thats out at the time unless you genuinely feel it and it inspires you. Also play and perform live as much as you can.
Thanks for your time Pat, and good luck with the launch show
Thanks!
