The first time I heard Brooke “Owl Eyes” Addamo was when she played her rendition of Foster the People’s Pumped up Kicks which is arguably better than the original. Her new album which will be dropped on the 19th of April can only be described as spectacular.
The intro to the song is named accordingly as Intro. It only goes for 2 minutes but I could already hear a hint of similarities to a Flume song. You can hear little hints of Flume-like little nuances all through the album.
Nightswim, the first song with vocals and the namesake of the album has a real slow and relaxed vibe. A little bit of string instruments in the middle break up the song. The song is repetitive, but it works well.
The following song, Hurricane shows off Addamo’s voice really well.
There is a distinct start and finish to each song in the album, there is no continuation from one song to the next and each song builds itself up and has its own uniqueness. In electro-poppy music like this there is often the problem of each song sounding the same. Owl Eyes has done a good job of keeping it fresh and different.
Her voice, is just so good. Diamond in her Eyes starts off at a slow pace and she sings in a mellow voice. The verse slowly builds up in speed and pitch and is layered very well.
Ivory is very filtered and would sound awesome on a good set of speakers. The music behind the vocals has a very big 80’s vibe.
Find Out is my favourite song on the album. It’s upbeat, very poppy and includes a little breakdown and drop. It’s edited heavily in some parts and not at all in others. She has one of those voices that could sing almost anything and make it sound good.
Owl Eyes has really outdone herself with Nightswim. She has managed to find the balance between catchy pop melodies which many other similar bands don’t achieve. She will be touring in May, make sure you don’t miss her.
