Northlane @ Plastic, Melbourne (29/03/2013)
Melbourne’s favourite alternative club Next was almost completely full with people waiting for Northlane to play. After releasing their second album Singularity (which took the number one spot on iTunes Australia) last week the venue was so packed with hard-core lovers, that many people couldn’t even see the stage. I found a little spot next to the sound tech and waited for the five piece galacticore outfit from Sydney to kick into their unique take on metalcore/hardcore.
They opened with the two openers for Singularity, which worked really well in a live setting. The mosh instantly went sick, with arms failing everywhere in the circle pit. Front man Adrian Fitipaldes was handing the microphone around to the keenest fans at the front. Many even tried to steal the microphone off him.
In the following song masquerade the mosh exploded even more. I was really surprised at how close the fans got to the members of the band, it seemed that they could jump up at will so they can stage dive off. It was really interesting to see such energetic music in such a confined space. Despite the distractions, the band didn’t miss a note.
One of the stand out additions to their latest album was Terrance MacKenna’s speech in the song singularity. They played this clip between songs, but it was hard to hear over the sound of the crowd.
Towards the end of the set, Adrian told thanked their record company We Are Unified saying that they “wanted to create a unified family of bands” and that that’s exactly how he feels.
After a pretty long set, they finished with Quantum Flux before coming back with Transcending Dimensions as an encore.
