_Myles Mayo (15/10/2011)
We recently spoke with Myles Mayo, who is currently touring up the East Coast in preparation of his new EP.
Hi Myles! Thank you for answering some questions today. First up, most would know you from The Special Patrol. How does it feel to be a solo act after years with the band? Have you found the album release and touring experience different and in what ways? What made you decide to head out to record a solo album?
Just being in the band for so long I guess. Everyone has different lives and jobs and after a while it becomes very hard to organise five people to practice, play, demo and record. It was just easier to record an album from home in my own time. And… just a different experience I guess, it was fun and a massive learning curve… I bought some great new equipment and did loads of experimenting to learn how to get the best sounds.
You’ve been on a few tours recently with some pretty big names; how did you find touring with bands such as Eskimo Joe, Micah P Hinson and sharing the stage with The Cat Empire?
All of these shows were very fun! Oh boy, one time we stayed up til 2 o’clock… in the morning!
You have some shows coming up over the next few weeks on the east coast, what would your fans expect from the nights?
You might expect to see myself, Paul, Sonny and Sam give birth to a baby called music!
The new EP sounds like it will be great! Can fans expect to hear the songs from it on the upcoming tour?
Yes, on this tour we are playing the entire EP from start to finish…. Plus many other songs from the LP slipped in between all these songs.
Can we expect any more touring or new studio recordings after this upcoming tour?
Yes, the plan is to have an all new EP ready by early next year. And then another full length album by the end of next year. I’ve been writing and recording again which has fun.
Your songs are remarkably catchy and dynamic; where do you find your inspiration for writing and recording?
I’ve always just liked writing and mucking around recording music and playing in bands and so it just became a part of me I guess.
How did you first get involved in writing and making music?
I started strumming the guitar at about 14. Then I began making songs up pretty much from that point. I started a band with my friend Rob on drums and a few years later that ended up being Special Patrol. We played together right up to the band stopped last year and then I made this latest album by myself.
Lastly, If your self-titled album could tell a story in one sentence what would that be?
A young man leaves his small town for the bright lights of the city and realises that when you play the album backwards he leaves the bright lights of the city for his small town.
