Motion City Soundtrack, The Early November, Deaf Havana @ The Hi-Fi Bar, Melbourne (25/02/2013)
For many, Monday night was kicking off Soundwave 2013. Deaf Havana, The Early November and Motion City Sountrack put on an entertaining and memorable show for all the fans that walked down the stairs to the Hi-Fi.
The five piece from the coast of England Dead Havana started the night. In their first time in Australia since forming in 2005, they impressed fans and first time listeners alike with their catchy pop-punk songs and stage presence.
Front man James Veck- Gilodi was really funny between songs often talking about how “miserable” England is and how happy they are to be in Australia. I’m a bore mostly and Leeches were the highlights of the set for me.
Opening with Stain on the Carpet from their latest album In Currents, I was instantly really excited to hear The Early November in their first Australian tour together ( frontman Edward “Ace” Enders toured Australia a couple of times and played at Soundwave in 2009).
Many fans like me were worried that they wouldn’t play together again after going on a hiatus in 2006. The bands live execution of their songs was almost perfect, including Ace Enders’ awesome pitch and bassist Sergio Anello’s energetic movement and passion around the stage. I Want to Hear You Sad really hit home with me and reminded me of listening to it my early teenage hood, the lyrics instantly flooded back. Ever So Sweet was dedicated to the “oldies” and was received really well.
Motion City Soundtrack showed everyone why they were the headliners of the night. With a consistent string of albums and tours under the belt, many dedicated fans had come to see them play. They crowd erupted when front man Justin Pierre (and his hair) walked on stage.
They started with their poppier songs from Go and my Dinosaur life – My Favourite Accident, Her Words Destroyed My Planet. When You’re Around really drew me into their set, as I think Commit to this Memory and Even if it Kills Me are two of the best albums from the 00’s.
All members of the band put on an incredible performance, with Jesse Johnson being the coolest keyboard players of all time. Justin was really funny and charming between songs ,“I had Thai for dinner. I had the decision between Thai and Mexican and I chose Thai. I thought that was something I needed to share with you. Here is a song!”.
They played a great combination between their new and old music, with Disappear and Hold me Down (one of my favourite songs, and my highlight for the night) for the encore.
All three bands played awesome sets and if you have the chance to see them at Soundwave, you won’t be disappointed.
