Marilyn Manson, Apocalyptica, Deathstars @ The Tivoli, Brisbane (27/02/2015)
With an epic night at The Tivoli lined up and ready to go, The Hell Not Hallelujah Tour from shock rock industrial king, Marilyn Manson, with Deathstars and Apocalyptica was the last chance to get up close and personal before their final Australian performances at Soundwave over the weekend in Brisbane and Sydney.
Sweden’s Deathstars opened the night with their unique gothic metal sound. Complete with their trademark face paint and stage uniforms, the group won the crowd over with frontman Whiplasher Bernadotte’s sexually charged performance and both guitarist and bassist, Nightmare Industries and Skinny Disco (stage names for those who are worried), solid stage presence, delivering a show that was a force to be reckoned with. With Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah ringing out, Apocalyptica made their way to the stage with cellos in hand to deliver their symphonic heavy metal to the masses. With Franky Perez stepping in to perform vocals on the likes of I’m Not Jesus and I Don’t Care, the Finnish band answers many of the crowds requests and performs Metallica’s legendary track, Nothing Else Matters. “Are you ready for the metal?!” the band calls out, before breaking into Sepultura’s Inquisition Symphony and the title track of their soon to be released album, Shadowmaker. With the band announcing their final song for the evening, they play the first few bars of the Australian national anthem, a tongue-in-cheek move which sees the crowd continue it along and successfully sing the whole song back to the band, to much joy and delight of everyone within the venue, all before the epic finale of Hall Of The Mountain King. |
And
then finally, it was time for the main event, the Antichrist Superstar
himself, Marilyn Manson.
Entering the stage in a sea of red strobes and smoke, the band breaks out into Deep Six from the latest album, The Pale Emperor. From the ultimate throwbacks of Disposable Teens and Mobscene, through to the newer stuff of No Reflection and Killing Strangers; from Manson’s screams that send shivers down your spine to Twiggy Ramirez’s pulsating industrial bass grooves, the band delivered a stadium worthy performance within the confines of such an intimate venue.
With a stage show that was bonafide Manson to a T; an epic set including The Dope Show, Sweet Dreams and This Is The New Shit, the event marked an absolute return to form from the shock rock megastar, but the night had one last surprise in store, and with an encore performance of The Beautiful People, Manson’s “personal friend, personal saviour, and personal guitar hero”, Johnny Depp (currently in Queensland filming the latest instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) was welcomed to the fold to join the band on stage to perform guitar. With a crowd cheering for the duration of the songs and a sea of mobile phones trying to get a snap of the duo in action, the night certainly ended on the highest of highlights.
