Little Hurricane – Gold Fever (06/10/2014)
Rock Duo, Little Hurricane, have been in the works after their critically acclaimed album Homewrecker was released in 2012.
Gold Fever was born in a 19th century apple-packing house in Julian, California, an old mining town. An aptly named album was created by the duo who found each other through a craigslist ad in 2010. Their latest album has a swampy rock vibe whilst also dappling nicely in a few other genres. Summer Air is an upbeat track that holds some amazing use of rusty guitar riffs. The vocalists crisp crooning definitely sets the tone for the amazing vocals that are showcased on this album. Upside Of Down has a steady rhythm but probably doesn’t have anything too attention grabbing compared to other tracks on the album. Sheep In Wolves Clothes was unusually more indie than any of the other tracks. While keeping the electric guitar, it doesn’t seem to have any of the rustic country rock that most of the album has. |
Boiling Water has more soul than most of the other tracks, with the added horns giving small hints of a jazzy big band backing. No Man’s Land makes good use of a cowbell like most country rock songs do. The electric guitar makes the vocals sound even edgier. Bones seems to have this tumble weed sort of rhythm, it steadily ambles along with the continuous guitar riff to move the song along. Breathe is a sweet little duet between singer and guitarist, Tone Catalano, and drummer and vocalist, C.C Spina. It is a simple song, but it mostly driven by their sweet vocals.
Con Man’s stripped back verses are really a merit to the band, it highlights Catalano’s voice with that rusty guitar crooning throughout the track. Sorry Son seems to move away from the feel of the other songs on the album, it comes across a little more pop-y. While definitely not bad in anyway, it gives the album a bit of something else. Also the epic guitar solo in this brings it back to the roots of the album.
While Superblues keeps the underlying rustic country feel, it still has a more rock feel than the other tracks on the album.
Title track, Gold Fever, has a mix of that dirty guitar that they love to use and clapping back beat. There is an overlapping Americana and rock theme mixed in the song that works really well. Grand Canyon had the dirty guitar you would expect for a song named after the famous landmark. All with a fantastic little harmonica riff that really brings the western style sound.
Overall, this album consisted of quite a number of good tracks. While only a few songs seem to hold a few similarities, there seems to be quite an amazing creation of old rock sounds in each individual track. The adaptation of other genres with Little Hurricane’s own twist worked really well, there latest album really is a little gem.
