Lisa Mitchell - Spiritus EP (08/05/2012)
Lisa Mitchell, the indie darling of the Australian music scene makes a return with the Spiritus EP, a five track release which sees the young singer more confident than ever before.
The EP is a huge step-up from her excellent debut, Wonder. Mitchell's style is elegant, yet whimsical, evident through the opening track Spiritus. There's a spark in her voice that draws the listener in, before a sombre piano melody floats in with Diamond in the Rough. It's definitely the clear gem on this release, the piano complimenting Mitchell's vocals.
I think that the best way to described this EP is that it is an intimate one, with Mitchell choosing a personal approach to each track. The acoustic guitar melodies are simply sublime, particularly on I am a Traveller, while Erik is much more reflective and subtle, melting into the listeners surroundings.
Closing number Parade Song, is filled with vivid imagery of a celebration, with Mitchell taking the time to describe all the wonderful details for the listener.
With producing duties helmed by Evermore's Dann Hume, Mitchell's work only continues to grow and grow with maturity and flare. With the EP a lead-up to her forthcoming sophomore album, we can only wait with anticipation to hear what else she has in store for her listeners.
