Lisa Mitchell - Bless This Mess (17/10/2012)
The first song of off Lisa Mitchell's second album is titled Providence and it begins slow and simple, but begins to rise with the addition of Lisa's voice and orchestral instruments. The lyrics are structured poetically - "I'm here, I'm ready" she sings and so was I for the rest of the album.
So Much to Say is more upbeat and includes the range of voice that Lisa Mitchell is known for.
Lisa’s iconic sound in Bless this Mess is extended by the use of new instruments and special effects; this is most noticeable in Spiritus and The Present. You Pretty Thing includes a distorted electric guitar and adds a rocky feel to the album.
The Story of The Raven and the Mushroom Man sounds very similar to Neapolitan Dreams from Wonder and has a little too much going on for my liking. Better Left Unsaid also sounds like Animals, which I found a little distracting. In spite of this, they gel well in the progression of the album from start to finish.
I think the final song I know you're somewhere is about thinking about someone you miss that used to be a big part of your life. The words remind me of the past, "I hope you're somewhere having a good time, I know you're somewhere having a good time” and I wonder what certain people who used to be in my life are doing right at that very moment.
Bless This Mess is a great album to listen to straight through. Lisa Mitchell found the perfect line between experimentation and keeping her sound that is loved by her fans. It also includes a bonus song untitled song at the end, so don't turn it off straight away!
Another noteworthy part of the release is the artwork. When you open the album is the inside of the cover. It's like being a part of Lisa Mitchell's personal scrapbook with little artworks and drawings, it really compliments the music that's inside on the CD.
