Kim Salmon - The Darling Downs (13/08/2013)
Hi Kim, I’m Luke, thank you for taking the time to talk with The 59th Sound today.
With success comes a great expectation from fans. Do you think that you feel external pressure given the success of the previous releases and if so, how do you deal with that throughout the writing process?
Well, sometimes I think I’m being deluded thinking anyone gives a fuck about what I do, but sometimes I do see that people like a particular thing, and can’t help but trying to reproduce that thing. It’s futile to try and do so of course.
Having known each other for over three decades, do you find that it makes the collaborative process a much more personal experience?
No, I think the collaborative process does have that creative side to it regardless. Creativity is a very personal thing, and doing it with someone else can only compound that. Fortunately, I only seem to collaborate with people I like these days so it’s always a positive thing.
Now on a more serious note, recent times have seen Australia’s music venues under threat. What message would you give to the Australian public on the importance of preserving our live music scene?
Music, like art, is our cultural backdrop. It’s our environment. If we don’t value it by giving it a place to he heard, we are yet again destroying our environment, which we are particularly good at doing.
Now I ask this question in every interview, but what has been your favourite music release of 2013?
I haven’t really got a favourite, but from listening to RRR Radio down here I’ve come across some things I’ve liked: Julie Ruin’s ‘Run Fast’, Sunny and the Sunsets ‘Antenna to the Afterworld’.
I also like Hunx and his Punx’s ‘Street Punk’ and I like Shannon and the Clams ‘Dreams in the Rat House’.
And finally, what advice would you give to young musicians and bands looking to start their careers?
If you’re already a young band looking for a career, then it’s too late for me to tell you anything. All the things I have been driven by no doubt drive you and nothing will put you off this madness.
