You
may not be familiar with Barcelonian producer John Talabot, but you should be.
He makes pop-inflected house music, fusing driving club-friendly beats and
gorgeous soaring melodies. In the lead up to his appearances the 2012 St.
Jerome’s Laneway Festival, we speak to John about his upcoming tour and how he
got his start in the music industry.
Where would say has been the most fun to perform?
Actually, I’m not sure maybe a party I played in the in the United States. In New York it was a party for the people and we played during ah we played two Summer’s ago. It was really nice where we were playing and Glasser was playing as well.
And this is the first time you have you been to Australia?
It’s the first time, I’ve never been before.
What would you say is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on tour or on stage?
Ah most embarrassing thing. At the moment I don’t have embarrassing things unless maybe when I was playing in a club and the power turned out. Later they put it again and I turned around and then suddenly I realised it was my fault because my foot was taking out the power out, so it was my fault.
Next year, your first visit will be as part of the St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Which bands are you looking forward to seeing and playing with at the festival?
Oh many, all of the line-up is really amazing and I’m looking forward to see them all like M83 or Toro Y Moi and The Cults and sbtrkt. I like all of them, I think they are really special and I think it’s a really good lineup.
With such a diverse line-up, if touring separately which band or artist would you love to support?
Actually I don’t know, but my friend Dolores would be cool and M83 too would be cool as well.
What would you say are some tips for struggling or musicians who are just starting up?
I think that the one thing is having trust in what you do. I think that nowadays its quite easy to make music and people think they make one track and that they will be released. Sometimes people don’t get that you need to have your own concept and your own music.
And who would you say has encouraged you the most?
I’ve been always supported by my family and my ex girlfriend. She helped me a lot with this project and with the album, my friends, they’ve always supported me quite a lot.
How did you get your start in the music industry?
I started working in a club and later in the offices in the club. They had a label that released different foreign releases, so in the end I was the contact with other labels.
And what would you say are your favourite styles of music?
I like pretty much all music. For example like some Italian producers and I like the old house music like Chicago.I learned a lot from playing records and listing to the sets from the 80s. I’m quite a fan of that style.
Can you tell us about your plans for the future?
Actually I am just releasing the album and I’m not going to get too stressed about it, that is my plan. I would like to release the album and do some tours, the moment and not be too stressed for the future.
What do you love the most about being on stage?
Usually when I’m on stage DJ’ing.
What instruments/technology do you use for your music?
I make a combination of software and hardware I like the analog equipment.
And finally, what song would you suggest for first time listeners?
Maybe a combination of the albums and mixes, I would say Sunshine defiantly and uh Leave Me , they are the main ones I would pick.
