Jimmy Eat World, My Echo @ The Forum Theatre, Melbourne (17/11/2014)
Having performed at The Forum earlier in the year for Soundwave, Jimmy Eat World's return to the magnificent venue was to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the release of their 2004 album, 'Futures'.
I'm not overly familiar with the support act, Sydney's My Echo. To be honest, their band name sounds like the musical clone of 5 Seconds of Summer or One Direction, and walking into the Forum, that's kind of what I expected to see. Thankfully, my (admittedly, unfair) expectations were shot down as My Echo are the complete opposite of a commercially produced pop boy band, and could easily be described as a fantastic blend of four parts The Living End, King Cannons (RIP), The Gaslight Anthem, and Social Distortion. Judging by tonight's performance by My Echo where they showcased material off of their debut EP 'The New Approach', it's safe to say the future of Australian rock 'n roll is in great hands. A now landmark album in music, tonight Jimmy Eat World's 'Futures' was being given the full live treatment. With two shows sold out in Melbourne alone, the demand of Jimmy Eat World is still as strong as ever, and rightfully so! The album set was roaring with the momentous energy Jimmy Eat World are acclaimed for. Frontman Jim Adkins works the crowd with his charismatic stage presence, ensuring that the crowd feel as involved in the performance as the band does on stage. 'Work', 'The World You Love' and 'Polaris' were set highlights, while closing number '23' reinstated that 'Futures' is a timeless album in Jimmy Eat World's career. |
A short intermission gave the audience and band a much needed breather after the 'Futures' set, before Jimmy Eat World returned for a performance of greatest hits. Standout songs included 'Big Casino' and 'Lucky Denver Mint', while 'Blister' and 'Disintegration' capped off the night.
Returning to the stage for a third time, Jimmy Eat World capped off a fantastic night with an encore bookended by their two most popular songs, 'Bleed American' and 'The Middle'. The bond shared by Jimmy Eat World and their fans is incredibly unique. Even after the house lights were up, and we slowly shuffled out the venue, you just knew that you'd witnessed something incredibly special by a band who are timeless.
