Jessica Jade – The Steps We Took (21/04/2012)
The Melbourne-local singer/songwriter Jessica Jade has just launched her debut EP The Steps We Took. The combination of recording in the home of country music, Nashville Tennessee, and Jessica’s own musical background has created an album with a strong country-pop sound that takes on the likes of Taylor Swift and Alanis Morrisette.
Coming from her Australian Idol appearance and the Tamworth Country Music College, Jessica has brought through a mix of genres into her song writing. And with the work of producers Mark Fell and Sam Hawksley, The Steps We Took plays as a unifying force between these musical influences.
The opening track Goodbye introduces the strength of Jessica’s vocals that continues across the later tracks. Her voice creates a perfect blend of the country and pop styles, flitting between higher and lower ranges throughout the song. The accompaniment of a simple drumbeat and blend of piano and guitar creating the melody, complement Jessica’s vocals and maintain her musical style.
The remaining tracks continue to work with the balanced mix of guitar and piano, creating a sound similar to that of Taylor Swift’s earlier works. With songs written throughout Jessica’s life and recent musical experiences, each track speaks of a journey through love and life, forming the perfect foundations for both country and pop songs. The strength of Jessica’s vocals and song writing are highlighted throughout each track, while the restraint of the accompanying instruments serve to balance out her vocals and develop the country-pop genre.
Finishing off the EP with the track, Wish You Were Here, brings a unique take to this country-pop style. With only simple piano melody and Jessica Jade’s vocals, the song is built through the catchy melody and attracts listeners with easy to follow lyrics and vocals. At only just under a minute and a half, this track brings together the qualities of Jessica’s song writing and musical talent into a beautifully crafted song that speaks of a love lost.
As a debut release for Jessica Jade,The Steps We Took has been crafted into a balanced and comfortable mix of country and pop influences. Jessica’s vocals play effortlessly throughout the tracks maintaining her strong presence, with the band accompaniments complementing her song writing and vocal style. And it is clear from these tracks that wherever Jessica Jade continues to set her music, the influences of her Australian background will feature strongly and blend perfectly.
