Jamin Orrall - Jeff the Brotherhood (03/06/2015)
Sitting in my office listening to the new album Wasted On The Dream, instantly wanted to push my desk over and run outside, the energy just bursts out of the record, can you tell us about the environment this album was created in?
(Laughing) well thank you. The album was written in and around and all over Nashville, a lot of it was written at Jake's (brother and band mate) house and in our practise space, we had beautiful weather for a lot of the time.
In comparison to your previously release you took time a long time off touring whilst working on this record, was that time taken to focus on the record?
Absolutely. We set goals, we tried to get a few songs a week.
How did it feel putting pressure on the project?
It's a little stressful, it was different because we're working with a bigger label, so they had their opinion on what songs they liked, it wasn't that bad.
It's enough of a challenge deciding on songs and parts with two people let alone throwing more opinions in the mix.
There was some songs that we liked and they (the label) didn't really like. It was weird at first but we knew what we were getting into when we signed the deal, we didn't think that we could just go crazy, they definatly wanted some sort of say, it wasn't like they make us do anything.
Well it's a great sounding recording.
Thank you.
And this was the first time the band took on the role of producers, is that something you'll do again?
Yeah actually Jake's just started producing other people's records, he just finished a record with a girl called Coleen Green, so he's been doing that and we'll probably keep working on our music together.
That's if you can find the time off again. Personally I prefer a band who can deliver live and you've built up a huge fan base from connecting with fans face to face, was that part of the plans when starting the band?
Yeah I think so. It's how we started out just getting up there and playing live, it got us to where we are now. To be honest, we never try to make our records sound like our live shows.
Before starting Jeff The Brotherhood you and your brother had other bands, obviously you've known each other your whole lives, what drove the full time focus to this project?
We made the album in 2009 and it was a good representation of us and it was first time we thought people might like it so we just decided we would put it out ourselves and just start touring non stop so we both quit our jobs and moved out of our houses and started touring, just playing house shows and where ever we could and then we got a booking agent, he kept us on tour for a couple of years and it just kept going from there.
That's a hard move for anyone to make, to quit everything to take this risk, you guys seem pretty cool, what are your parents like?
Our parents are awesome, their main priority was for us to be happy so anything that makes us happy makes them happy, they've always just let us do what we want to do and not pushing us in any direction.
The way I see it now this album is the success, this is the rewards for all of those struggles. How do you feel?
It feels really good, I don't really know how far we might take this, you can't control that stuff.
This whole conversation you've mentions plans and goals, what's the next plan?
One of our main goals is go back to Australia I think that's going to happen which is awesome and we'd love to play in Japan which we've never done and we'll work on another record that we'll start producing ourselves, we haven't even started writing it yet but we'll make another record in Nashville and this time it'll be back to us calling the shots.
