Jason Mraz - Love Is A Four Letter Word (21/05/2012)
From coffee shops to stadium’s Jason Mraz’s music is universally loved. His new album had some phenomenal success even before its release; the single ‘I Won’t Give Up’ topped Billboard’s digital songs chart and reached over 2.5 million YouTube views.
His world tour in 2011 inspired this album. His global travels focused on music’s lasting power to spread change and helping others through global citizenship. This album continues in the same vane highlighting the feel-good power of music.
Physically the record is full of features; it has two CDs. Both have pop-ups, one urging you to sign-up to the mailing list and watch exclusive videos. The other CD pops up with the music video for ‘I Won’t Give Up’.
‘The Freedom Song’ opens the album a reggae kind of atmosphere mixed with jazz moments. The track has some big band moments but is for the most part a smooth step into the album, introducing the feel of the album.
‘Living In the Moment’ has the relaxed, peaceful atmosphere you would expect of a song named as such. It’s an enjoyable listen that while not too special is great to listen and whistle along to.
The track ‘93 Million Miles’ is lilting, enchanting and a track that shows some of the best moments of the album. The already successful single, ‘I Won’t Give Up’, is beautiful. It’s a love song at its best and leaves me hoping he really doesn’t give up on whoever this girl is. Soulful and relaxed, it’s surprising when his voice jumps in strength and reiterates that he won’t give up. This track is a highlight of the album. Other highlights included, ‘In Your Hands’ and ‘Frank D. Fixer’.
The extra CD has the demo version of ‘I Won’t Give Up’. If anything this version is all the more sweeter and feels like Mraz is singing straight to you. This track actually challenges as to which is the better version, the tracked or the demo? Also attached are live versions of ‘The World as I See It’, ‘You Fckn Did It’, ‘The Women I Love’ and ‘I Never Knew You’.
There is something special about live tracks and each of these proves that nothing beats the experience of a live show. They all have interactions between Mraz and the crowd and show clearly the audience reaction Mraz gets from his songs. The songs treat you to what you would experience at a Jason Mraz concert.
His last CD had ‘I’m Yours’ reach triple platinum in Australia, this album has set up ‘I Won’t Give Up’ to reach the same success. ‘Love Is A Four Letter Word’ is a bright burst of sunshine; maybe a bit too bright for some listeners but definitely an album to try out; it may just make you smile.
