Jack Ladder, Ghoul @ The Metro, Adelaide (22/09/2011)
To be honest I approached this gig with an open mind, due to the fact that I had only heard of Jack Ladder a week prior to attending his performance. However, I was somewhat blown away by my new found addiction to the darker side of music. Playing at the Metropolitan Hotel, an alternative scene in the heart of Adelaide, Jack Ladder’s crowd seemed to fill out all that was left of an undersized venue.
To accompany the night, Triple J Unearthed band Ghoul set the scene. Bursting onto the scene during 2008, Ghoul presented an Electronic/Indie genre unlike any other. Built upon the melodicside and distinctive sound of singer/producer Ivan Vizintin, their music is intensely rhythmic and at times quite abstract. With their multifaceted track titled 3Mark, Ghoul produced a soulful sensibility that was thoroughly appreciated by most.
The room then dimmed and all that was visible was a big friendly giant awaiting an eager audience. Showcasing his latest album Hurstville, his third album to date, Jack Ladder has caused quite a mixed reaction within the Australian music world. Resembling the gothic musings of The Triffids and The Church, Ladder’s sound was impressive.
On a personal account, guitarist Kirin J Callinan was a stand out. His unique talent seems to be a highlight when playing in Jack Ladder. Completely taking the stage and transforming the material, his aura was truly mesmerising.
Jack Ladder creates an immersive and emotional sound. A crowd favourite was his opening song Beautiful Sound. This song seems to resemble his latest fondness to the dark side: “When the heart breaks it makes a beautiful sound”. The night then came to an end with his final song, You Won’t Be Forgotten. Falling to the floor his dramatic ending encapsulated the audience and ended the night in great spirit.
