Husky, Elana Stone, Amaya Laucirica @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne (11/10/2012)
Lined up for their first Australia show since an around the world tour, a big buzz was anticipated at Richmond to see the Melbourne boys Husky return to their hometown.
First support act Amaya Laucirica arrived onstage without her usual band and an electric guitar. Her blend of folky rock got the small crowd that arrived at the Corner Hotel early tapping along to the beat.
The next support act, Elana Stone, began her show on the floor amongst the crowd with her Tambourine which added a sense of intimacy to the night. She was wearing what appeared to be a black and white skin tight suit with pink underwear on the outside. Later she revealed her “banana costume” which was actually a pink leotard she said she was wearing to “keep herself awake” after being on a plane. Also playing solo with her piano and accordion (which is probably the most badass instrument), Elana Stone’s Jazzy pop, great vocals and really funny stories between songs provided a perfect prequel for Husky.
As soon as Elana Stone finished, there was a rush to get to the front of the stage and hundreds more people filled the room. After a quick change over, the red curtains opened slowly. Husky strolled onto stage and began playing Tidal Wave to the audience’s cheers.
Front-man Husky Gawenda’s voice did not miss a note all night; the perfection of the music was really impressive for a live gig. Husky’s harmonies were very impressive with the help of Gideon Preiss on the keys and Evan Tweedie on the bass. The crowd stood in awe as they took in Dark Sea and Million Dollar suit.
Husky’s metaphorical lyrics and charming stage presence created an emotional atmosphere. They announced that they were very happy to be back in Melbourne after months of touring around the globe and dreaming about home. Gawenda said “It’s amazing how hundreds of people looking at you can wake you up”; You wouldn’t have noticed that they had arrived back in Melbourne that morning on minimal sleep.
They continued with a cover of INXS’s Need you Tonight. After each song Husky Gawenda would shyly say thank you, while Gideon Preiss would have a sip out of his tea cup.
For one song, the other band members walked off stage and Husky announced that he was going to play a new song for the first time live, which was called Wolfman. The new song was what you would expect from Husky, the lyrics very conceptual and deep.
Gawenda said, “The next song is about running away and starting a fresh new life, which is a really hard thing to do. That’s why I wrote a song about instead”. The song was Don’t Tell Your Mother and was followed by an amazing solo piano performance from Gideon Preiss.
They finished off with History’s Door with The Woods as an encore. Triple J unearthed winners have come leaps and bounds since releasing Forever So in 2011 and are touring around Australia for the next couple of weeks before embarking back overseas to America and Canada. If you have the opportunity to see them live, it’s a great show and you won’t be disappointed.
