Harry Hookey - Sometimes EP (11/11/2014)
Victorian singer-songwriter Harry Hookey has released his new EP Sometimes and it is impressive. The folkster has extended himself to embrace a range of styles to create something that comes across as both familiar and fresh at the same time.
Opening track Sometimes has a Lennon-esque quality with its driving piano, bass and guitar (the “I Am the Walrus” vibe is very enjoyable). Misdiagnosed has a short acoustic intro before also kicking into more rocking territory. Where I’ll Be Found is a classy acoustic number that combines quality playing and vocal harmonies for an instantly accessible folk song, and final track Lovin’ Touch starts slowly but builds to a heavier groove that would work a treat in a live setting. Hookey himself has been quoted as saying that his music is a combination of influences that has meshed to give him a sound "somewhere between James Taylor and Nirvana." This is a good call – fans of Wilco and Ryan Adams should get on board! You’re a wizard Harry! |
