Guthrie - Guthrie (12/02/2012)
Guthrie is composed of Liam Guthrie and Luke Young; this self-titled album bursts into Australian music with strong drums and a great beat. Guthrie is the classic blues voice and guitar we hear throughout the CD and Young is the strong beat with his drums and percussion.
This album has a strong blues voice with a 1970s rock music sound that together is reminiscent of an era missed by many. Opening with South I was immediately impressed with the confidence and sound of Guthrie. Upon second listen I found myself singing along unconsciously to the chorus of “Yo, Heave Ho”. As an opening song this track gains attention through being a great song to sing a long and have fun to.
Blues Ate My Homework opens with good drum track and strong guitar. It has great mix of rock and blues. The song Little Ditty has a harmonica solo; which is kind of questionable in modern music but really just sounds exactly as the track name says, a little ditty to enjoy in between songs.
Last Laugh is the bit of heartache you’ll find in every CD. Every CD has that song and this song is presenting a strong case for a tune of heartbreak with lines such as ‘broken hearts and broken bones’.
Bitch’s Kitchen seems to be a bit of a guy’s song… personally not a favourite but definitely gives an image of strong country wives. “She’s going to burn you” is my particular favourite line of the song.
Hitchin’ was an enjoyable song; slower paced than the rest of the album it oozes a happy atmosphere and a calm day or night. It is a song to grab a loved one and dance or to simply sit and enjoy. A standout of the album; it offers an individual sound to listeners and leaves you wanting to listen again and again.
The album is a bit too reminiscent of AC/DC songs in some areas with guitar riffs sounding like particular songs. Moving beyond that though the album is fun to listen to. It was made to be heard, and any tour would be a great experience if it lived up to the sound of the album.
