Grouplove, CSS @ The Hi-Fi Bar, Melbourne (23/01/2014)
Walking into Melbourne’s the Hi-Fi Bar, I was surprised to see a sold out sign for the Big Day Out sideshow combination of CSS and Grouplove. I quickly found out why.
Brazilian rockers CSS kicked off proceedings and I must admit I had minimal knowledge of the group apart from hearing a few songs here and there. Although a great deal of the set I had never heard before, it didn’t matter as the energy shown on stage by the group kept myself and the crowd enthused.
Lead vocalist, who goes by the unique name of Lovefoxxx, set the scene for the night with her unusual dance moves and it was clear to see that the crowd wasn’t just here to see Grouplove.
Popular track, Hit Me Like A Rock, got the crowd singing along and from there the performance moved at a fast pace. Music Is My Hot Hot Sex was also well received by the crowd who seemed to be having a good time.
“Alright, shit’s gonna get real,” Lovefoxxx said, before the group rounded out their performance with I’ve Seen You Drunk Gurl.
After a short interval, Grouplove took to the stage and opened with I’m With You. This was followed by Itchin’ On A Photograph, from their debut album Never Trust A Happy Song.
Lead vocalist, Christian Zucconi, thanked the crowd for coming and introduced the group’s new material. “This is a track off our new record, it has nothing to do with sharks, it’s called Shark Attack,” he said.
What came next was by far the peak of the band’s impressive performance. The group belted out their hit single, Tongue Tied with much bravado before rolling into a cover of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody. This part of the performance easily gained the best response from the crowd all night.
“You ready to get weird?” Zucconi asked, before joining the front row to perform Bitin’ The Bullet. A solo from drummer, Ryan Rabin, complete with glow in the dark drumsticks, was an ideal way to end the set.
But it didn’t take much for the group to hop back on stage for an encore. They began the encore with Borderlines and Aliens, before Zucconi announced, “I swear to god this is the best fucken show I’ve played in my life, no fucken joke.” These comments were backed up by a photo uploaded on the band’s Facebook page with the caption, “Melbourne you blew our fucking minds #bestshowever”
The band continued to perform at their peak, pumping out recent single, Ways To Go. This was a clear crowd favourite on the night. They finished with their hit single Colours which launched their career a few years ago. These acts deserved to play in front of a full house at such a great, intimate venue like the Hi-Fi Bar and did not leave the crowd disappointed.
